As the 80 million members of the millennial generation (or Generation Y) begin and advance their careers, Los Angeles and Southern California executives are paying more attention to how to successfully incorporate millennials into their workforces.

Defined as being 16 to 35 years of age and sometimes incorrectly generalized as having less than positive work habits, this group’s enormous size and future roles in leadership mean that executives must devise strategies for bringing them in, training them, and developing them. At risk if this approach isn’t adopted is a significant future talent drain.

Reviewed in this article are strengths and risk factors characterizing millennials, as well as six strategies to support recruiting and retaining them.

The long-term challenge to keep engagement, productivity and satisfaction levels high for millennials underscores the importance of creating an attractive and rewarding work environment for them.

Aware of the need for leaders to come from this group, forward-thinking business leaders are well-advised to meet with their management teams to identify and implement the steps needed to bring millennials in and groom them to assume future leadership roles.
