  Article Summary
The Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) has brought major changes to the regulation of financial reporting and corporate governance practices.

While SOX requirements may seem burdensome, time-consuming and costly – especially when organizations are first developing systems and processes for assessment and compliance – the intent and basic tenets are sound.

In fact, all companies – from small public companies granted relief under Dodd-Frank to private firms of any size and even non-profits – can benefit from compliance. Companies adhering to SOX requirements will achieve best-in-class governance structures and improve their operational effectiveness and efficiency in the long term.

This CFO Edge article reviews key sections of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act to identify the financial management and information technology areas that warrant attention.

Three SOX compliance strategies are discussed with recommendations that address SOX task force composition, as well as SOX assessment and gap analysis. The article lists seven links to online SOX resources that include a Bloomberg Businessweek compilation of up-to-date articles and four SOX professional groups on LinkedIn.
